The American author best known for giving a voice to Holden Caulfield, the teenage protagonist of The Catcher in the Rye, has died. J.D. Salinger was 91.

The reclusive author died of natural causes Wednesday at his home in New Hampshire, according to his literary agent. Salinger had stayed out of the limelight after the success — and controversy — of the 1951 novel The Catcher in the Rye.
